The recent announcement of disallowing the practice of hourly rated rooms in Joo Chiat gave hope that sleaze can be removed from the district. Across the border, the Malaysian Chinese paper Sin Chew published a report that Singaporean men are booking and paying for hotel rooms in Joo Chiat monthly. These rooms are used as primary lodging their mistresses and as a venue for their trysts. In fact, it was suggested that when the man is away at work, their mistresses may use their rooms for prostitution. Looks like the reputation of Joo Chiat is now known internationally.
